There is a curse still alive and well in the high elevation of Utah. It causes our fingers to crack, our lips to flake and our skin feels like it’s being pulled tight in every direction.
Every time the temperature drops we start feeling dry and our Summer skincare routine doesn’t seems to do the trick. We layer on lotions, masks, some resort to rubbing straight olive oil on their skin….yet, we still see the patch-like lizard spots rearing their ugly heads! It’s irritating and sometimes even painful. Considering we see hundreds of people with this dreadful condition, we decided to post our top picks for the most effective fixes.
Let us start with the most common problem, our lips. There are so many different lip balms out there that range from hydrating lipsticks, to waxy balms, to the products we put on baby bums. Honestly, we have tried them all. Start by avoiding anything that has petroleum listed as the main ingredient. It feels good when your lips are all slick and glossy, but it wears off fast causing you to reapply far too often. It is also just a seal, not a moisturizing agent. Use an ingredient that is safe to consume and is absorbed into the skin. We like shea butter, almond oil and coconut oil.
Our pick: Fresh Lip Treatment $23.
Smells yummy, feels smooth, and comes in a great selection of sheer colors! If you don’t want scent or color you can also use the straight stuff, L’occitane or European Soaps Organic Shea Butter. They both come in a container big enough to use for a year and are great on cuticles, knuckles, lips and even baby bums!
The face is the hardest. Most people have a face cream they love, but when Winter hits it just doesn’t cut it. I have used creams that feel like oil, to creams that felt like drying cement. The one ingredient that everyone should be on a first name basis with is hyaluronic acid. Picture a little clown car that can fit 1000 clowns inside. Hyaluronic Acid is the car, and water are the clowns. Our skin needs all those little clown cars to hold water, otherwise the water doesn’t stay on your skin.
Our pick: Dermologica Skin Hydrating Booster $56.
You actually add this product to the moisturizer you already use, but it’s packed with a ton of hyaluronic acid. It increases the hydration of your much loved creams. Brilliant right?! Plus it is amazing underneath your eye cream. Win!
Let’s not forget the one place we don’t see during the winter… our legs. They get neglected and turn into a chess board of dry and patchy skin. This also applies to our arms and elbows. We change our shower gels, lotions, oils, and it still appears like a nasty little magic trick we keep sparing with! One word…..Exfoliate. But let’s do it right. Avoid SALT. Only use sugar. Sugar is a humectant. It helps keep you dewy and moist.
Our pick: Lalicious Sugar Scrub $34.
This baby is awesome. It gently removes dry skin while dusting your skin with lightly scented oil when you are still in the shower. (plus you can shave with it.. imagine the best shave of your life).
