I am a hoarder. I will admit it. I don’t save old newspapers, socks, or strange lampshades… but I can’t throw out a piece of makeup to save my life. I am filled with “what if’s?” What if I need to wear an orange lip color with a green sequined dress? (I saw Jennifer Lopez wear that combination on American Idol 3 years ago and I still think I will be able to pull it off.) What if I get really tan and don’t have the same foundation I used that summer 6 years ago? What if I run out of black eyeliner? I’ll be really glad I saved this stump for the last 2 years. It doesn’t end there, I will save a tablespoon of body wash and body lotion. Just in case.
It’s the New Year! 2013 flew by; let us welcome 2014 by getting rid of the stuff that weighs us down!
Start with foundations. Women always ask me, “Does makeup go bad?” To answer this question, yes. Check to see if your foundation has an expiration date. If it’s expired, throw it away. Second, if you haven’t used it this year, throw it away. If it has an SPF like tinted moisturizers, don’t keep it longer than 18 months. Finally, the most obvious answer… if it smells, throw it away.
Eye shadows last forever. I think they will easily outlast cockroaches and Twinkies. BUT they do get hard. The oils used in eye shadows will dissolve, leaving you with a hard lump of purple rock. Also, they carry bacteria. To avoid eye infections, rashes, or any other irritating eye issue, toss them every 2 years.
I am sure you have noticed your lip gloss has a funny odor after the year mark. They will turn the fastest. If it smells, just get rid of it. It is the closest to your mouth.
It seems like your makeup should last longer than a year, but the truth is, it won’t. It doesn’t matter how often you use it. That isn’t a bad thing though. Would you really want to but something on your skin that has the shelf life of 10 years?
So here is to all of us, the gals that can’t let go. I just know that orange lipstick will come back in style, but when it does, I can splurge.
